I have this problem using a cable in Mazda CX5-2016. All of the steps described by ASTRO24 miss the point that the phone does connect and start carplay properly. Then, after operating for 1-2 minutes, Carplay spontaneously reboots in the car.

The HUD will display directions and speed limit from the SD Nav, nothing from CarPlay. In my 2018 mazda6, the speed limit displayed in the HUD can come from the Nav system or the camera. It should be the same with the CX-5. Do yourself a favor and don't pay dealer price for the sdcard. A lot of people get theirs on eBay or Amazon.

You can do this yourself if you’re a little handy and save about $300. CarPlay is a huge improvement over the Mazda system. I will be doing this with my 2017 this weekend and adding an aftermarket module that turns wired CarPlay into Bluetooth CarPlay, which is REALLY good.
